As governments, communities and businesses around the world become increasingly interdependent, global affairs experts are needed to navigate and address these complex challenges. Our interdisciplinary major provides you with the skills and insights to engage in the discussion and resolution of these problems. Throughout the course of your degree, you will gain a sophisticated understanding of global issues like terrorism, refugee crises, global inequality and health and environmental challenges, as well as develop your own area of expertise through your choice of a regional or thematic concentration.
You will also have the opportunity to take advantage of a variety of internship opportunities and participate in study abroad programs. Additionally, you will have the option of complementing your major with a second major or a minor.
The world’s leaders have a profound obligation to rethink the current international system. However, beneficiaries of the status quo have every incentive to undermine progress. Competing national interests and aspirations often trump political cooperation. Structural flaws, like the dominance of sovereign interest in the United Nations Charter, serve as formidable barriers to reform.
The world’s most pressing problems demand solutions that are as nimble and innovative as the threats themselves. The international system of the future will certainly include multilateral institutions, but it must be complemented by an ecosystem of networks and other modalities that are less hierarchical and more responsive to global needs. The success of the 02015 Paris climate agreement may be a prototype for this new architecture.
