The development of COVID-19 vaccines around the world has been in the spotlight since the pandemic began in late 2019. In a relatively short time, many pharmaceutical companies and research institutions launched ambitious vaccine development programs with a focus on effectiveness, safety and wide distribution. One of the most important innovations in the development of the COVID-19 vaccine is the mRNA technology used by Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna. This vaccine works by instructing the body’s cells to produce the SARS-CoV-2 virus spike protein, which then triggers an immune response. Clinical trials involving thousands of participants showed efficacy above 90%, making it one of the first solutions approved for emergency use in many countries. Apart from mRNA, inactivated virus-based vaccines, such as Sinovac and Sinopharm, have been widely used, especially in developing countries. This diversity of vaccine types leads to increased access across populations and geographies. Health authorities around the world, including the World Health Organization (WHO), are working together to establish guidelines for vaccine distribution to be fair and equitable. Through initiatives like COVAX, low- and middle-income countries can obtain much-needed vaccine doses. This is important to reduce the rate of transmission in areas that do not yet have full access to vaccines. The importance of mass vaccination can be seen from data showing significant reductions in COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations and deaths in countries with extensive vaccination programs. However, the emergence of new variants such as Delta and Omicron reminds us that this virus continues to adapt. The variant shows the ability to bypass immunity, both from previous infection and vaccination, so the development of vaccine boosters is a priority. Vaccine development is also not free from challenges. One of them is the issue of public trust in vaccines. Misinformation on social media influences people’s decisions to get vaccinated. Therefore, clear and evidence-based information campaigns are essential to increase vaccination rates. Globally, various research institutions continue to explore the development of new vaccines with a dual aim: higher effectiveness and broader protection against various variants. Research is also being carried out for a combination vaccine that can fight several variants or even other Corona family viruses. The COVID-19 vaccine is a crucial step in ending the pandemic, but vaccination alone is not enough. Health protocols such as masks, physical distancing and hand hygiene must still be maintained. Only with a combination of these approaches can society safely restore normality. In the midst of vaccine development, international collaboration and information transparency are important elements. Countries must join hands to share data, research and resources, accelerate future vaccine research and face the potential for similar pandemics in the future. With various technologies and approaches in vaccine development, the fantasy of a post-COVID-19 world can become a reality, as long as we unite in this effort. To face existing challenges, all parties must continue to contribute with understanding, research and supporting policies.
